Bear
Creek near Kaleva is called a creek but it is worthy of the title of a river.
Bear creek rivals many rivers in the state in both its fish populations
and beauty.
It is not stocked to my knowledge, but
supports healthy populations of browns, brookies, and in season the large lake runners.
For browns my favorite spot is the junction
with Coates Highway. There is a small pull-off there and a Boy Scout camp on the
opposite side of the river. Wading is easy, but be prepared for the Mosquito attack
during the mid-summer.
For brookies you can't beat the water off the
narrow bridge on Leffew Road. This is wild country and much of it is state
land. The brookies are numerous here and are not too picky.
