Got the job done. Just got my new digital camera had to break it in with a fish. The fish were very picky. Went through all my small emerger nymphs to no avail. Was running out of light for a good picture when I decided to put small Elk Hair Caddis and drifted it under the sweepers in my favorite hole, and the fight was on.

Without a doubt one of my best nights ever out in the stocker fest. Could get fish to chase rabbit strip streamers but not take. It wasn't until I tried out a fly with no name given to me by Shoeman sometime ago.... if I remember right he was experimenting with these on the Muskegon river. Well I should have taken a picture of the streamer before using it. Here are a few of the nice bows I took with it, right after another.
I really wish there was a way for the DNR to raise these fish in the pens so that they would end up with fins and a tail but it's a fun way to warm up for the season. Anyway is wasn't much after this that I hooked into one of the huge fish that are the size of about 2 footballs and it broke everything off, leaving me to wonder and try to remember exactly what this fly looked like. I am going to try and tie one up from memory but I don't think it will be exact. Maybe I'll have to go back out there and fish until I land that big guy.

Tough fishing with the crowds the cold and the wind but managed one brown on a Betty McNault, which is one of my all time favorite streamers on this river.

So as to not jinx the Red Wings I decided to go for a quickie on the Huron while the game was on. I was only able to get one nice brown as shown in the release below:
I also had the priviledge of seeing my first Eastern Massasauga rattle-snake. Wow pretty cool and got a nice snapshot as well.

Got a few more of the nice bows that the DNR has planted for stocker fest this year. Managed to take a picture of this one before my camera went in the drink. Green caddis nymphs worked best.

Well it seems they've planted some unusually large fish this year. Had the first night jitters and forgot my line snippers and most of my tippets. I only had 3X tippets and it's probably a good thing:
Took some time to land both of those dandies. Both were beautiful fish, one came on a streamer and the other on a green bead head caddis.
This last rainbow was the icing on the cake. You can really see the girth of the other two when you compare them in my hand to the last one.

The night got off to a slow start but like the weather, things
have heated up. Did someone say pig season is open? Here's a beautiful rainbow taken from one of my favorite holes.
Here's a picture of a nice brown from the same hole.
There were other fish as well but the pictures didn't turn out as
well. Towards dark I moved downstream a bit and found
a bunch of fish stacked up under a log. This pig
rainbow topped the night off. The picture really doesn't do
it justice.

I have fished this section of river since about 1990.
Today was the most beautiful day I have witnessed there during
this time and proof that this real winter of 2003 is not yet over.
I have seen snow there before during the early season but never
this much. It's good to see an good old fashioned
winter for once.
The fish seemed a bit lethargic but I was able to coax one into
the net with a bright un-named streamer.
The fish made a very cold day seem a bit warmer.

Another beautiful night on the Huron.
Had the pleasure of meeting and fishing with Clay. Caught
lots of small browns including the one below on small dries
(thanks for the picture Clay), but the larger trout were tight
lipped.

Well they were rising tonight. A nice sunny warm
evening got them turned on. You could feel the warm breath of the
woods over the cool water at dusk. Got into 3 nice rainbows. The
first two were on a 7x tippet using small flies and both game me
all the battle I could ask for. Landed the first but he flipped in
the net and his picture didn't turn out well. The second broke me
off after a dazzling ariel display.
Caught the third on a streamer (which I don't even know the name
of) at dark.

Good streamer fishing. Caught and released many browns
in the hour I was out there. Seemed like just about
every-time I put a new streamer on, I got a fish. The one
below hit a Mickey-Finn.

April 21, 2001
Finally got out for the first time this year. Went out
in the afternoon. Fishing conditions seem just about
perfect this year on the river. Lots of risers even at
mid-day. Got a-hold of one nice trout on a gray
midge. Lost him before I could land him. As
evidenced by a dead trout found in the river, there are some
monsters planted in there this year. The one I saw must
have been a transplanted lake trout or hatchery breeder. It would be tough to
land on any fly equipment even using a 1x tippet.

Very nice evening. Not many risers though. Got a
hold of one nice one on a size #22 knat. The fish put on
an acrobatic display before heading for a log and busting the
leader off at the fly line.

A very cold evening, but we were able to get into some
trout. Went 3 for 3, with this fish being the first.
All three were caught on midges and a Griffith's Knat.
Streamers didn't seem to be working this evening.
Saturday April 1, 2000
Low water marked the opener of the flies only season on the
Huron. As is the case in the rest of the Great Lakes area
water is scarce and the holes even harder to find. The
fish had been pounded all day so I was lucky to get so much as a
hit. Had two fish on and landed one, a nice rainbow.
Couldn't get the camera out of my pocket and get a picture
snapped before the restless fish flipped out of my hand.
Caught on a Betty McNault, the April 2000 fly of the month.

Went fishing with my oldest son. Tried some garden hackle, corn actually.
Got skunked again. Saw one angler with 4 nice fish.

No surface activity. No hook-ups.
Saturday April 10, 1999
Fish still very sluggish. Finally saw a fish rise in an
undercut bank. Tried a streamer and cast right in the pocket. Hooked up with a
very large rainbow. This was a rod and tackle breaking hoss.
Released
after a long fight.
Wednesday April 7, 1999
Very little surface activity. Had three good rips
at a streamer fished with action, one hook-up and LDR.
Friday April 2, 1999
Water extremely low. Because of this fish were
concentrated among several deep pools. Fish seemed to still be a bit spooky and not
used to their new environment. No hook-ups, although several other sportsmen did
catch fish.
May 1, 1998
Two trout taken, one LDR all on flies. One fish on a #22 midge, the other on a Royal Coachman streamer.
